Key experts gathered in the USA to discuss next steps for data privacy and protection to shape the future of a people-first digital ecosystem
3 October 2024
The 6th Annual Data Privacy Conference USA took place on September 17th in Washington, D.C., bringing together 181 legislators, regulators, industry executives, and civil society representatives to address the crucial role of data privacy in shaping a trust-driven digital ecosystem. The conference focused on the intersection of privacy, innovation, and governance, especially in light of the evolving technological landscape.
‘The United States leads the world in innovation and technology, so I believe it's time to lead in privacy, too’ said Senator Cantwell who opened the conference
This year's conference featured high-level discussions on developing a forward-thinking U.S. approach to data privacy and governance. Experts and policymakers debated strategies for anticipating future privacy challenges, evolving public perceptions of privacy, and the role of federal legislation. The sessions were especially timely, given the surge of AI technologies, with panels exploring how responsible AI practices could be designed to align with robust data privacy standards. Speakers delved into whether comprehensive federal regulation could serve as the foundation for future AI-related policies.
“How do we make sure that we control technology, and not the other way around? How do we make sure that technology works for us?” asked Alvaro Bedoya - FTC Commissioner
Another significant focus was on the creation of data-sharing frameworks that both prioritize privacy and promote societal benefits. Recent Executive Orders around data privacy and national security provided a backdrop for discussions on how to balance these often competing priorities. The global regulatory landscape also took center stage, with participants analyzing the impact of shifting data privacy regulations on international data flows.
“Without data privacy, we are not innovating to the scale that we need to as a Nation” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens.
As privacy continues to be a cornerstone of the digital age, the conference reinforced the urgent need for collaboration between government, industry, and civil society to create a data ecosystem that prioritizes both privacy and technological progress. With the rapid growth of AI and evolving privacy expectations, the insights shared at this event underscored the need for a proactive, people-first approach to privacy governance.
