iSSI® (intelligent Space System Interface) named as the winner of the Innovation in Space Award 2021

Forum Europe hosted its inaugural European Space Forum last month on the 8 & 9 November. in partnership with ASD-Eurospace and the EMEA Satellite Operators Association (ESOA). With over 700 delegates participating from across 44 different countries, this conference held a series of vibrant and thought-provoking debates, featuring over 60 of the most influential people in the European space ecosystem.

One of the key initiatives that took place as part of the event was the ‘Innovation in Space Award’. The award was launched with the objective of celebrating projects and organisations which are at the forefront of innovation and creative thinking within the European space sector.

The standard of nominees was extremely high, and after a very close competition, Forum Europe was delighted to announce that iSSI® (intelligent Space System Interface) Modular Coupling Kit, from iBOSS GmbH was the winner of the 2021 Innovation in Space Award.

The award was presented by Matthias Petschke, Director of Space, DG DEFIS, European Commission, who said: “Congratulations to you and the other finalists! You have all deserved the recognition. You’re now on your way as a hidden but not so hidden champion with a product which you have designed and invented which looks great. Well done!”

The winner of the award was selected by a panel of expert judges consisting of senior representatives from the European Commission, European Space Agency, ASD-Eurospace and ESOA, plus an audience vote during the European Space Forum. The judging panel praised the iSSI® Modular Coupling Kit, commenting that they found it as a “…unique concept that benefits reusability, expansion, cooperation, multi-function platforms and life extension. A highly compelling submission that has huge potential.”

iBOSS developed and patented this mechanical, electrical and communications interface called iSSI® Modular Kit to permit modular systems to expand whilst in space. The standard interface opens up the possibility of multiple technologies built by multiple players to interface with each other as Plug n Play or as described as "Lego in space".
