Celebrating a Decade of the EU Data Protection & Privacy Conference
8 January 2021
Forum Europe’s European Data Protection & Privacy Conference returned for its 10th year on 8 December 2020 under a unique format. While we hoped to convene in person in Brussels to look back and celebrate a decade of important debate and discussion around data privacy issues, the conference was held virtually, with over 470 delegates attending from all over the world.
Last month’s conference stimulated interesting debate. Topics explored included a discussion on the GDPR two years on and the future shape of the European digital landscape; data privacy in the global context, most notably Schrems II and the future of the transatlantic relationship; privacy & trust in the context of AI, implications of the E-evidence directive for privacy rights & what could be next for the ePrivacy file.
We welcomed a fantastic array of high-level speakers from many sectors and backgrounds to contribute to the discussion. Highlights of the day included an opening keynote session with Věra Jourová, Vice President for Values and Transparency at the European Commission, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, European Data Protection Supervisor & Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President Software Engineering at Apple. The event also featured a speech on the UK’s commitment to data privacy & trust from UK Minister of State for Media and Data, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport John Whittingdale; and contributions from Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka.
Attendees were able to take advantage of networking, exhibition booths and Q&A features on our virtual events platform, making the experience as close to a live conference as possible in current circumstances. A representative from one of the event sponsors event said:
"It was an interesting discussion and a pleasure to participate as usual. It must have not been easy to move everything online. Everything was well organised and worked perfectly"
We would like to thank everyone who attended this year’s edition, our event sponsors, Baker McKenzie, BSA | The Software Alliance, Cisco, EDAA, Google, Microsoft, SAP & Salesforce, and our knowledge partner, Encompass, for their support of the 10th edition of the European Data Protection & Privacy Conference. We very much hope to reconvene in Brussels in 2021 for the 11th Edition.
