A New Relationship: The EU|UK Forum hosts its inaugural Annual Conference

1 July 2021

On Tuesday 6 July, the EU|UK Forum will host its inaugural annual conference, titled ‘A New Relationship.’ EU-UK members will have exclusive access to this full day event, which will include conversations with political commentators and experts, policymakers, businesses, and civil society on the nature of the EU|UK relationship as it stands today and key areas for continued and future co-operation.

With the European Parliament’s recent vote ratifying the Trade and Co-operation Agreement between the EU and the UK, the focus now shifts to its implementation and how co-operation can be built upon and extended in the coming years.

While the United Kingdom faces a unique opportunity afforded to very few advanced economies – to review its laws from first principles – it remains unlikely that it will radically diverge from the EU in most areas, not least because the UK helped to shape EU law. The TCA also limits the possibilities for divergence, while the so-called “Brussels effect” will remain in areas such as data and emissions for the foreseeable future, demanding close EU-UK alignment.

This inaugural EU-UK Forum annual conference will assess, amongst other things, perhaps the biggest challenge of all: re-building trust and realigning the relationship.

The conference will host a wide range of speakers, including Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President, Interinstitutional Relations & Foresight, European Commission, João Vale de Almeida, EU Ambassador to the UK, Lindsay Appleby, Head of the UK Mission to the European Union, Terry Reintke, Member, European Parliament and Anu Bradford, Author of ‘The Brussels Effect’.

Access is exclusively for EU|UK Forum members. Membership is free for all, and you can sign up for membership here.
