460+ European and global privacy experts gathered online for 11th Annual European Data Protection & Privacy Conference

Forum Europe’s 11th European Data Protection & Privacy Conference took place on 2nd December 2021 and gathered, this year again a host of top-level privacy experts with over 460 delegates attending from all over the world.

The conference opened with a keynote session focusing on the theme “Transparency to re-ignite trust in digital technologies with Věra Jourová, Vice President for Values and Transparency, European Commission; Marjan Dikaučič, Minister of Justice, Slovenia; Éric Dupond-Moretti, Minister of Justice, France & Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs & Chief Legal Office; Google.

Chair of the EDPB, Andrea Jelinek joined an interview-style session led by Lara Natale, with the European Parliament’s Chair of the LIBE Committee Juan Fernando López Aguilar and SAP’s Global Data Protection Officer & Head of Data Protection and Privacy Mathias Cellarius to discuss what, if anything, is needed to improve and bolster the GDPR.

The first panel of day explored the intersection of data privacy and competition in the platform economy with Prof. Ulrich Kelber, Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Germany; Pascale Déchamps, Deputy General Rapporteur, Autorité de la concurrence, France; Dr. Paul Tang, MEP; Linda Thielová, Head of Privacy CoE, DPO, OneTrust ; Geraldine Proust, Director for Public Affairs, FEDMA; Elisabeth Dehareng, Partner, Baker McKenzie...

…while the second panel discussed the privacy implications of a data-sharing world in the context of AI and the creation of data spaces for the public good with Christian D'Cunha, Policy Officer, Cyber Security and Digital Privacy Policy, DG CONNECT, European Commission; Deirdre Clune, Member, European Parliament; Cornelia Kutterer, Senior Director, Rule of Law & Responsible Tech, European Government Affairs Microsoft Europe; Cecilia Álvarez Rigaudias, EMEA Privacy Policy Director, Meta; Daniel Leufer, Europe Policy Analyst, Access Now; Rob van Eijk, Managing Director for Europe, Future of Privacy Forum.

The first afternoon examined what the future may hold for international data transfers with considerations given to the adequacy principle, the transatlantic relationship as a new EU-US privacy shield still need to be achieved, the future of data flows with the UK and the implications of China’s PIPL with Bruno Gencarelli, Deputy to the Director for Fundamental Rights and the Rule of Law, European Commission; Joe Jones, Deputy Director for International Data Transfers, DCMS, UK Government; Barbara Cosgrove, Vice President, Chief Privacy Officer at Workday; Thomas Boué, Director General, Policy — EMEA, BSA | The Software Alliance; Vivienne Artz OBE, Global Privacy and Data Policy Strategy Advisor, CIPL & Stephanie Bodoni, EU Legal News Correspondent, Bloomberg News.

The event concluded with a reflection on The ePrivacy derogation and whether the balance between the right to privacy and the protection of children online has been stricken with Denton Howard, Executive Director, INHOPE; Ella Jakubowska, Policy Advisor, EDRi; Catherine Garcia-van Hoogstraten, Director of Responsible Technology, European Government Affairs, Microsoft & Michèle Ledger, Head of Media, Cullen International
