Shaping the Future of Retail at European Retail Day 2020

12 March 2020

The second edition of the European Retail Day took place last week on 4th March at the Thon Hotel EU, Brussels. The event was co-hosted by EuroCommerce, Euro Coop, European Retail Round Table and Independent Retail Europe.

The moderator, Joe Lynam, presenter at BBC, challenged the panels on how industry and policy are tackling sustainability and digitalisation within the retail sector. There was a buzz created on stage with a consumer representative (Monique Goyens, Director General, BEUC) who voiced the concerns and opinions from consumers to the retailers.

In addition to energetic panels, there were also keynote presentations which explored how consumers expectations are rising and what the commerce trends are for 2020.

Overall the energy and atmosphere at the event was fantastic and delegates went away with new ideas and information.

Sharing her thoughts of the event, Emmanuelle Maire, Head of Unit, DG CONNECT, European Commission commented “I particularly enjoy the fact they maintained a good gender balance. It is not always the case that we see many women on the podium and in attendance”.

The evening finished with a networking cocktail, where Regis Degelcke, president of EuroCommerce explained “This event is important for all the retailers. First of all because we share the best practise on digitalisation, sustainability, all of the subjects, and secondly because we are in Brussels and [the event] is important because we try to influence the urban government and MEPs in order to understand what we are going to do on this important subject and also to listen to them in order to fight the world challenges together”.

Both editions of European Retail Day have proved a success and we thank the partners, speakers and participants for joining us to talk retail.
