Building a European Data Infrastructure - What future for the European Cloud Federation?

9 July 2020

As Germany and France present GAIA-X – a proposal for a decentralised cloud infrastructure – and as the European Commission prepares the follow-up to its Data Strategy, Forum Europe & HPE hosted on 7 July a discussion on the policies, business models and investments needed to design the blueprint for Europe’s future data economy infrastructure. With over 200 representatives of the EU institutions, member states, businesses and other experts, the discussion on the roadmap to build a successful European Cloud Federation also focused on analysing the critical aspects of the project such as European data monetisation and data ownership.

The event titled “Building a European Data Infrastructure” was hosted and moderated by Irena Bednarich, Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa of HPE, and included two extremely insightful opening speeches, from Pearse O’Donohue, Director for Future Networks, DG Connect, European Commission and Norbert Schultes, Head of the Economic Dept. at the Permanent Representation of Germany to the EU. The conference was followed by a panel discussion that also included Gilles Thiebaut, Senior VP and Managing Director, Northern Western Europe of HPE, Kristof de Spiegeleer, Founder and CEO of Three Fold Foundation and Filipe Batista, Attaché in the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the EU.
